The first of Bart's houses that I saw was an extensive remodel for the Seymours in Los Altos. Bart built a huge room sheathed with glass and translucent plastic that joined two existing house together. The structure was made of curving laminated beams with steel brackets. I was impressed by the exterior form and rhythms of the structure which was over two stories in height. I did wonder how the interior of the imaginative structure could be dusted and cleaned out but was still captivated by the imaginative tour de force that Bart had built.

Bart has an interesting background. His grandfather had been governor of New Mexico and Bart was acquainted with Georgia O'Keefe and other arts notables. I found Bart to be cultivated and well read. We have long phone conversations about books, Frank Lloyd Wright, BG, the outcome of the Bavinger house and Nancy Bavinger, and politics. He was the first to tell me about Obama and how he would help our country and act as a symbol in repairing our image abroad. Other houses by Bart that I admire are the house for Joe and Etsuko Price on the beach at Malibu, California. A curving intricately shingled roof and a richly detailed wood interior combine to make and original and welcoming shelter. Bart's house for June and Brad Prince is a favorite. It is masterfully composed on a small butte in the desert and combines an artfully designed colored masonry wall with metaphors of an Indian Pueblo and a ruin in the desert. Large glass areas provide sweeping views for the kitchen and living areas long outreaching and perfectly scaled beams above the roof blend the house with the sky. The house is a study of mass, transparency, site relationship and regionalism.

The Henry Whiting house is another memorable work with a series of shingled roof forms sculpted to relate to nearby rolling hills. The floor plan of elliptical shapes connected by a curving enclosed ramp is another example of Bart's originality with forms. Bruce Goff had noticed Bart's student work while visiting Arizona State at Tempe and asked to meet him. Bart did much work for Goff and travelled with him to Japan and other places. When BG died in 1982 Bart finished and built BG's design for a pavilion- museum that was added to the Los Angeles County Musuem. BG's museum housed the Joe Price collection of screen paintings by Japanese masters. Bart is very much his own man when it comes to architectural design and his best work is a contribution to Architecture as shown in Taschen Publisher's large two volume, "Modern Architects from A to Z", on architects contributing to modern architecture over the last three hundred years.
