Matt is an architect with an original background. He was at Taliesin during the last two years of FLW's practice , he spent a week with Bruce Goff , and worked for Eichler Housing, a prominent design/ build company producing modern houses. With Eichler, Matt saw a connection to Wright's Usonian houses which Matt hoped to eventually produce. He also worked for construction companies. His aim was to become competent in all phases of design, construction, estimating, production and client involvement in the process. In 1981 Matt read my book, Building to Last, the thesis of which was the building of civic cores, plazas, and parts of developer's projects that are historically zoned, and employ artists and citizens in an ongoing program of renewing craftsmanship, local history, community participation and emphasizing earth textures and mass and a heightened connection to body sensation. I called these structures "armatures" which maintain a certain given design while allowing future additions. Matt took off on the idea in a completely original way best revealed on his website, Matt Taylor, Armatures. (link to Taylor's website) Matt has designed office environments that are constructed within conventional office buildings. These consist of conference areas, computer and media centers and other individualized functions possessing beautiful and functional overhead lighting integrated with shapely overhead divisions to articulate interior work areas into functional and aesthetic focus for the benefit of users.

Matt and his wife Gail have developed a consulting practice in which they combine all physical structures, setup, clients' patterns of interest and objectives. They use a comprehensive communications and systems approach. Matt's overview and systems approach parallels my proposals in Building to Last and other of my design proposals for building with artists.
