University of Kentucky Parking Structure: Lexington, Kentucky, 1968 As consulting architect for this city-block-sized parking structure, my responsibility was to give architectural expression to this 600-car parking ramp and standardized structural system determined by others. A clay tile screen free of the structure gives human scale and lively patterns made by sun and snow and interior lighting. The scale and color of the blocks relate to buildings nearby and soften the standard construction of the parking ramps. Continuous dotted, horizontal bands made by the block pattern give compatible textural readings for pedestrians in people in passing cars. |
